Ever wondered what goes on in the costume department of a big budget biopic? Marie Claire goes behind the scenes with the costume team on The Iron Lady to talk 80s styling and first female PM fashion.

The biopic tells the story of Margaret Thatcher, the woman, the MP and then PM, and the price that she paid for power.

‘The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge,’ said Oscar winner Meryl Streep who plays Thatcher earlier this year.

‘I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses - I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own.'

The film also stars Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher as well as Olivia Colman, Anthony Head and Richard E Grant.

One of the most striking aspects of the picture has been the painstaking recreation of the iconic wardrobe worn by Thatcher throughout her years in power.
