Girl Power! The Spice Girls are expected to perform as a group for the first time since 2008 at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in London

The Olympic Games are set to get a dose of girl power, with news reaching us that the Spice Girls are set to perform as a group for the first time since 2008 at the closing ceremony.

Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Mel C will sensationally reform and join the likes of Queen, The Who, George Michael, Annie Lennox, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and Take That to provide the musical entertainement at the star-studded sporting spectacle. Exciting!

It's understood that Posh, Baby, Ginger, Sporty and Scary (as they'll always be known to us!) will perform two songs – one of which will be their 1996 debut single Wannabe – to the Olympic stadium crowd and, in even more fun news, Geri Halliwell will wear the iconic Union Jack flag dress that she wore to storm the Brit Awards in 1997.

Sources have revealed that the comeback is '95%' confirmed, with Victoria letting slip in a radio interview yesterday that she would 'love nothing more' than to sing again with the rest of the band.

Talking on RTE’s John Murray Show, she said: 'I don't know about a comeback tour, but I loved being back with the girls. We are so proud to be English and we are very excited about the Olympics.'

I bet she is, if these rumours are true. An insider has revealed that the Spice Girls were approached two years ago about performing at the ceremony, but their hectic work schedules made it tricky to finalise.

The source told the Mirror newspaper: 'Talks are back in full swing and the balance of power rests with Mel C (who is currently busy as a judge on TV talent show Superstar). Everyone is hopeful she will agree to perform.'

Fingers crossed!
