We knew that Jay-Z was somehow involved with the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby, but co-collaborator Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts revealed the rapper is composing the score for the film
The film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, hits cinemas in May, but it looks like Jay-Z and Samuel spent the Christmas holiday hard at work on the music for Luhrmann’s retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic.
Samuel, the younger brother of singer Seal, took to Twitter to announce the collaboration, writing: ‘Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!‘
Neither Luhrmann nor Jay-Z have confirmed the news, but other hints suggest that Jay-Z is indeed scoring the film. Not only was one of the rapper’s songs used for the first Great Gatsby trailer, but according to one of the film’s stars, Isla Fisher, Luhrmann also blasted Jay-Z on set to help his actors relax.
‘On my first day he had Jay-Z pumped up full and we did the entire scene with, you know, Jay-Z in our ear on full blast while acting and it was just so liberating,’ Fisher told MTV News.
With the amazing cast, fantastic story, talented – and unpredictable – director and Prada-designed costumes, we were already desperate to see this film. Now we’re positively giddy with excitement. You too?
