As the news broke that Kate Middleton was pregnant with her first child, Twitter, predictably, went nuts. Cheryl Cole was one of the first celebrities to tweet her congrats, writing: 'I’m sooooooo excited that we’re having a royal baby!!!! Congratulations to Kate and Wills !!!!!!'

David Walliams, who is expecting his first child with Lara Stone, tweeted: 'Congratulations! Well done William and Kate. Very happy for you both. Dx'

Virgin boss Richard Branson wrote: Congrats to Kate & Will on expecting your first child. The happiest day of your life to look forward to.'

Kim Kardashian also got in on the action with: 'Awww, so cute!' while opera singer Katherine Jenkins said: 'What lovely news!! Congratulations to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge!! #PitterPatter.'

Arnold Schwarzenegger's former wife Maria Shriver also added: 'Wonderful news for Prince William & Kate Middleton. Kate has Hyperemesis. Had that with my last child. Not fun at all. Hang in there, Kate.

Also quick to send their well wishes to the happy couple was President Barack Obama who wrote: 'We extend our congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the welcome news out of London that they are having their first child' and David Cameron who said: 'I'm delighted by the news that the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby. They will make wonderful parents.'

Yesterday the Palace were forced to confirm the happy news that the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William are expecting their first child after Kate was taken to hospital with acute morning sickness.
