The songstress sparked a frenzy of Tweets when she announced her pregnancy at the MTV VMAs

Super-songstress Beyonce smashed a Twitter record during the MTV Video Movie Awards on Sunday, after her pregnancy news and bump-revealing performance sparked a frenzy of Tweets.

The social networking site has confirmed a record 8,868 Tweets were sent per second during Bey’s explosive Love On Top performance at the ceremony - eclipsing the previous record of 7,196.

The blooming star spilled the baby beans to press and fans as she walked the red carpet at the awards, arriving with a tiny baby bump, and telling reporters: 'I have a surprise!'

And within seconds Twitter was abuzz with excited talk about the news.

But it wasn’t until Ms Knowles’ live performance at 10:35pm that the social networking surge peaked, smashing the existing record as Bey ripped open her sparkling Dolce & Gabanna jacket on stage to show of her blooming bump and fuller new figure.

The previous highest number of Tweets posted per second was set earlier this year during the Women’s World Cup between Japan and America, while the Royal Wedding and Osama Bin Laden’s death also set record highs.
