Michael Christian and Mel Greig spoke out on their hoax call in emotional interview earlier today

The Australian DJ's responsible for a hoax call to the hospital where Kate Middleton was staying last week have broken their silence, describing themselves as 'gutted, shattered and heartbroken' in an interview about the death of the nurse who took their call.

Michael Christian and Mel Greig, pretended to impersonate the Queen and Prince Charles to obtain personal information about the Duchess of Cambridge and her stay in the private medical centre, where she was recovering from a bout of severe morning sickness.

Just three days later, nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who put their call through to a colleague stationed outside Kate Middleton's hospital room, was tragically found dead.

Breaking their silence on the events, Christian and Greig, who both deleted their Twitter accounts after being bombarded with angry messages, described their call as a 'silly little prank' which was 'never meant to go that far'.

'The first thing I asked was: "Was she a mother?"' Greig said in an interview she gave with co-host Michael Christian in Sydney.

She added of the nurse's family: 'I've thought about it a million times. I want to reach out to them and just give them a big hug and say "Sorry".'

    'I hope they're OK. I really do.'

Describing hearing of Saldanha's death as 'was the worst phone call I have had in my life,' she said: 'There is not a minute that goes by where we don't think about her [Mrs Saldanha's] family and what they must be going through.

'The thought that we may have played a part in that is gut wrenching.'

The unsuspecting nurse was duped by the Australian DJs, from 2Day FM, last week, as they pretended to impersonate members of the royal family.

Sadhana is thought to have then transferred the hoax call - which came through around 5:30am - to another member of the nursing staff, who unwittingly gave away private information about the Duchess's stay at the hospital, including the best time to pay a visit to Kate.

Prince William and Kate Middleton, who is resting at Kensington Palace, are said to be 'deeply saddened' by the nurse's death.
