Kate joked that security guard Emma Probert had 'beaten her to it' after she announced her baby news

Kate Middleton is reported to have joked that her security guard Emma Probert had 'beaten her to it' after hearing she was pregnant.

The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have been joined by Emma after the royal wedding in 2011, when she became an official member of the royal family.

Although Kate's security are not normally seen, it's thought Emma has been at her side on almost every official outing, even accompanying her through St James's Park on her morning runs.

So naturally, the Duchess was thrilled when she heard the news.

'Catherine was so happy for Emma,' a source reportedly said. 'She told her she'd be the best mum and joked that she had "beaten her to it"!'

It's thought Emma Probert and Kate Middleton formed a close friendship during their time together, with Emma booming a 'close confidante' to Kate.

'I think Catherine was upset that she will be losing one of her closest friends just when she is needing her the most,' the insider said.

'Obviously there's meant to be a discreet distance between the Royals and their security," the source added, "But they're humans, not machines.'

'Emma's become a really close confidante to Catherine and she gets on really well with her partner Colin [Childs], too.'

Last month it was revealed Prince William and Kate Middleton could be thinking about having a family as soon as next year.

With a successful Diamond Jubilee tour under their belt, and no big engagements planned in the coming months, it's thought 2013 could well be the time we hear the pitter patter of tiny royal feet.

Back in June, rumours began to circulate that Kate Middleton was pregnant, after MP Claire Perry made the claims during a visit to Marlborough College.

Caire Perry made the revelation as she gave a talk at the Duchess of Cambridge's former school - the exclusive Marlborough College - claiming a royal baby would be 'good for the economy'.

'I think Kate Middleton is pregnant – and that would be good for the economy,' she told the audience.
