Claire Perry made the revelation as she gave a talk at the Duchess of Cambridge's former school - the exclusive Marlborough College - on Friday, claiming a royal baby would be 'good for the economy'.

'I think Kate Middleton is pregnant – and that would be good for the economy,' she told the audience.

But the MP was later slammed for her controversial comments, with royal watchers branding Perry's musings 'unhelpful,' and explaining she was probably 'trying to make a bit of a name for herself'.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers said of the Kate Middleton pregnacy comments: 'Unless she has visited the same gynaecologist it strikes me as extremely unlikely she might know.

'It’s quite clearly none of her business to make remarks of that kind, and presumably it is not very helpful either.

'She seems to be a bit of a loose cannon, and this is probably more loose cannon fire from Mrs Perry.'

Meanwhile, Royal observer Ingrid Seward explained it was 'highly unlikely' Kate Middleton is pregnant, given William and Kate's full schedule of royal engagements this year, adding it will probably be 2013 at least before we see a royal baby on the horizon.

'It’s very unhelpful for her to say that. She would have no insider knowledge,' Seward revealed of MP Claire Perry's pregnancy claims.

'It will be the best-kept secret of all time. There is no way they would want people to know before it was appropriate.

She added: 'Historically there has always been speculation about this sort of thing, and of course you cannot stop people saying what they want. I should think the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are probably pretty used to it but also pretty fed up with it.'

A Clarence House spokesman has yet to comment.

Earlier this year Prince William sparked rumours we could soon be hearing the pitter patter of tiny royal feet, revealing in an interview he would 'rather like to have children'.

'I'm just very keen to have a family and both Catherine and I are looking forward to having a family in the future,' he gushed.
