Spotted on the runway at MM6 and adored by the street elite – the shirtdress is shaping up to be a summer must-have and it’s time to get acquainted. Is it shirt or a dress, we hear you cry? Well, arguably it’s both, which could cause all sorts of confusion in the how-to-wear department. But relax – the shirtdress oozes effortless style, so whether you channel granddad-cool or Grecian goddess, it's fail-safe fashion! Here’s three of our favourite ways to style it up.

1. Loose or layered A long-length chambray shirt will be the most versatile piece in your wardrobe. As a rule-of-thumb, a length that rests mid-thigh at the front and sits lower still at the back, is bare-leg appropriate. A cricket jumper or sleeveless knit is a relaxed way to wear the look through spring and will amp-up the shirt's preppy credentials. While there’s still a chill in the air, team with a pair of black leather leggings. Be sure to include it in your holiday suitcase, too – it will make for a chic kaftan worn unbuttoned over a simple white bikini. Shirtdress, £39.99, jumper, £34.99, hat, £12.99, all H&M.

2. Minimal Effort Tick off two trends in one purchase with a transparent shirtdress. See-though fabrics such as mesh and organza are having a serious moment this season, and the barely there look requires minimal styling tricks. Wear with nude, safari-style flats and a cross-body bag for day, and then take it straight into the evening with a wedge heel and a smudge of blush. Sheer brilliance! Shirtdress, £69, COS

3. Go Grecian If thoughts of getting your legs out are casting serious doubt over the whole shirtdress trend, then we’ve got news: maxi-length shirtdresses are everywhere this summer! Long-length, long-sleeved and loose, this style is gorgeously insouciant and perfect if you need to cover up in the heat. Wear with the season’s most-worshipped sandal choice – the knee-high gladiator – and really nail the bohemian look. Shirtdress, £88, Free People
