Did the Queen wear these brooches to secretly troll Trump?

We know the Queen has a subtle way of sending out signals with her sartorial choices. Like this is how to tell when she's bored of you, and when she sends signals with her jewellery.

Now Royal fans are saying that the brooches she wore during Donald Trump's UK visit were actually a secret dig at him.

First there was the one she wore on the day the US President landed in the UK, which just happened to be a personal gift from Barack Obama.

She was hosting a visit with the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar at Windsor Castle, wearing the piece of jewellery commonly known as The American State Visit Brooch. The Obamas apparently picked it out themselves at a small jewellery shop in D.C.

User Julie, under the Samurai Knitter handle, tweeted, 'The U.S. has given QE jewelry before over the years and I bet her dresser could put hands on any and all of it given five minutes. But she chose the most sentimental piece in the collection, the one that was given OUT OF FRIENDSHIP WITH THE OBAMAS AS PEOPLE.'

Next up, the Queen picked another very significant brooch to receive Trump at Windsor, one that is known as a mourning brooch - because it was made famous when she wore it to her father King George IV's funeral.

In fact there is a famous shot of her wearing it, alongside her mother and grandmother, entitled 'Three Queens in Mourning'. Incidentally, this was the same day people protested against his visit in London, brandishing the controversial Trump baby blimp.

Finally, for the day Trump left the UK to visit Putin, the Queen wore a third brooch to a State Banquet. While we don't have a picture of it, we know it was the Sapphire Jubilee brooch, a gift from Canada.

Again Julie tweeted, 'It’s called the Sapphire Jubilee Brooch, and it was given to the Queen of England as a gift for ruling for eleventy billion (okay 65). From Canada, you know who Trump’s been screaming about and insulting. The commonwealth country and one of the UK’s greatest allies. Them.'

Another coincidence? We'd like to think not.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
