Fashion came to a standstill and Twitter almost died as 65 models hopped, skipped and frolicked around Chanel’s Haute Couture show in Paris yesterday. How? They were all wearing trainers. Karl Lagerfeld has officially annointed the humble trainer the ultimate, nay, the only acceptable footwear for the year ahead.

Karl brought the sports field to the catwalk, as models bounded down two enormous staircases that flanked the otherwise minimalist stage at the Grand Palais yesterday. Of course, they weren’t just any trainers – these were trainers, Karl-style. These sneaks were pure ice-cream-pastel fantasies – sparkling, crystal-covered and chiffon.

Karl Lagerfeld is king of contradiction, meshing high and low fashion without compromising that Coco-cool, and the show yesterday was a fine example – tweed t-shirts, crystal cropped tops, rainbow-coloured bum bags, furry headbands and Chanel logo knee-pads. Pure genius.

Model du jour Cara Delevingne closed the show in an ethereal fairy-dust bridal gown and matching trainers, looking like Chanel’s contrarian Queen. Karl’s putto-esque godson, wearing matching, miniature trainers was on hand to hold Cara’s train. Trainers are well and truly back as fashion's sport-luxe obsessesion, and frankly, we’re all for it.
