Actor has filed a $50m lawsuit against US publisher for articles that said he abandoned his youngest child
Tom Cruise has filed a $50m lawsuit against an entertainment magazine publisher for articles that said he has abandoned his youngest child, Suri Cruise.
The 50-year-old actor is suing Bauer Media Group, the publisher of In Touch and Life & Style magazines, for articles that claimed he had abandoned six-year-old Suri Cruise following his divorce from Katie Holmes.
The US magazines ran articles in July and September with the headlines ‘Abandoned by Daddy’ and ‘Abandoned by her dad’, with a source claiming that Cruise was no longer involved in his daughter’s life.
Cruise‘s lawyer, Bert Fields, said the star does not like to file lawsuits, but the stories were a complete lie.
‘Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri,’ Mr Fields said in a statement. ‘She’s a vital part of his life and always will be.
‘To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.’
Fields said Cruise would donate any money awarded to charity.
Last monthCruise‘s lawyers had to defend claims the actor hadn’t seen Suri for 50 days, explaining that he had been filming his latest thriller, All You Need Is Kill, in London, but spoke to his six-year-old ‘every day.’
Katie Holmes, 33, shocked the world when she filed for divorce in June. Although the custody arrangements have been kept private, Suri lives primarily with her mum in New York.
