She and Freddie Prinze Jr. have been married for SIXTEEN years. Where has the time gone?

All our 90s dreams came true when our teen idols Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. tied the knot back in 2002. After meeting one another on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, they both eventually started dating and they’re still married to this day. (Who knew a trashy slasher flick was a great foundation for romance?) Although many celebrity marriages have come and gone this year, the pair celebrated the other day and Sarah dropped a hilarious nugget of relationship wisdom.

She shared a cute selfie of the pair standing in a very romantic parking lot yesterday, smiling into the camera. In the caption, Sarah wrote, ‘Anniversary #latergram Someone told me -Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning all you need is two hearts and a diamond. But years later, you wish you had a club and a spade. #happyanniversary @realfreddieprinze’

We love the analogy, even if it’s a little dark. TBH, it sounds like something we could see a much older Buffy Summers spouting off to Willow on a girls’ night at the Bronze.

The Prinze on the other hand didn’t share any gushy anniversary images on his social media, but that’s probably because his Instagram is purely dedicated to his podcast Prinze and The Wolf. (And a handful of food pics, because not even Freddie can resist a brunch snap.)

Sarah and Freddie have been married since 2002 and have two children: 6 year old Rocky James Prinze and 8 year old Charlotte Grace Prinze. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress actually shared an adorable photo from their wedding back in 2002 earlier this week, of the pair looking much younger and giggling the whole way through.

This isn’t the first time that the Scooby Doo actors have opened up about their marriage - in fact, they’ve dropped a few much needed nuggets of wisdom along the way. Given that they’ve been together for over sixteen years now, we’re definitely listening.

Sarah said on Harry per the Daily Mail, ‘I feel like there are certain things that should just be kept your own and they never need to know. Also, maybe, possibly, a separate shopping credit card; or if you are a guy, maybe a separate gaming card so I don’t have to see how much video games cost.'

Gaming seems to be something of a sore spot for Gellar, as she revealed in the same interview that she resorted to joining a ‘support group’ called Widows of Warcraft - all centred around people who had lost their partners to the game World of Warcraft.

Freddie Prinze Jr has also weighed in on their relationship in the past, revealing that he thinks they’re so solid because they were best friends first. Although they did initially work together on I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997, according to the Daily Mail they didn’t start officially dating until 2000 (they married two years later).

‘We were just friends. That's one of the reasons I think our relationship has always been so good,’ Freddie told E! News. ‘We were just friends for a good two years before we ever went on a date. She knew what kind of guy I was. She knew what my morals were, what my priorities were and visa versa. We already kind of knew all the faults in the other person.’

‘We ended up being the perfect balance. But it didn't happen until years after and there was a solid foundation built, and that's probably the main reason why we've always been cool and groovy,’ he finished.

And cool and groovy is all we can really hope for, isn’t it? Congratulations on sixteen years of marriage guys - here’s to many more.
