Katy Perry plants a smacker on One Direction at MTV VMAs 2012

The pop star broke the hearts of girls everywhere by kissing members of boyband One Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards 2012 in Los Angeles

Katy Perry became the envy of girls the world over last night, as she kissed members of heart-throb boyband One Direction on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards 2012 in Los Angeles.

The superstar singer, wearing a sexy leather and sequin floral gown by Elie Saab Haute Couture, took to the stage at the glitzy ceremony at the city's Staples Centre to present the award for Best Pop Video to the British group.

But instead of the usual conservative kiss on the cheek and quick hug, the Fireworks songstress treated the band's Niall Horan and Harry Styles to a full-on peck on the lips.

Niall later took to his Twitter account to post a picture of the smooch with the caption: '@KatyPerry looks like it's official... me and you!'

To which Katy replied: 'I'll be your Mrs. Robinson.'

It was a triumphant night all round for the handsome fivesome, which also includes members Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, who were formed in 2010 after appearing on The X Factor. As well as the award for Best Pop Video, the band beat off stiff competition from Carly Rae Jepsen, Fun, Frank Ocean and fellow boybanders The Wanted to bag the accolade for Best New Artist, as well as scooping the prize for Most Share-Worthy Video.
