  • Mary Berry describes the moment she became smitten with with Duchess of Cambridge, as she gives her most emotional interview to date. Don't miss it...

Kate Middleton has a habit of spreading joy wherever she goes, but it looks like Mary Berry was more smitten than most when she met the Duchess of Cambridge.

Talking about the pair’s delightful encounter, The Great British Bake Off icon revealed how she reacted when Kate said she likes baking her cakes.

‘I was chuffed to bits,’ Mary says simply, as she appears on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.

‘Prince William said Kate used my recipes,’ Berry revealed after meeting Kate last August. ‘They were big fans at a charity auction.’

In the emotional interview on ITV, Mary also opens up about the loss of her son who died in a car accident in 1989.

Recalling the tragic moment she received the news, she says: ‘I remember it well. It was a Saturday and he nipped out to get The Times because it had a feature on Business Studies and that’s what he was studying in Bristol. He went out with Annabel and it was a beautiful sunny morning.

‘The doorbell rang, I went, and there was a policeman there. It’s very strange but I knew something had happened. He said, ‘I’m afraid to say your son has died and Annabel is in High Wycombe Hospital’. I remember thinking then, ‘I just hope Annabel’s alright’.

‘So Paul came home and we went to the hospital and I can remember endless corridors and then all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I saw a pink tracksuit and Annabel running down the corridor. Mud on her, but there she was, perfect. I thought, ‘We’re very blessed that we’ve got Annabel and Thomas, but we don’t have William.’

‘We were lucky to have two other children. Imagine if you have one child and you lose it. I think it brought us all terribly close together,’ she adds bravely.

The legendary TV cook also delves into her relationship with GBBO co-judge, Paul Hollywood, and her childhood – including a brief experience of smoking tobacco.

Oh Mary Berry, as if we could love you any more.
