Johnny Depp may be on to something here.

The actor caused a stir at the Beijing press conference for his new film Transcendence on Monday evening by wearing a diamond ring on his left hand. Reporters on hand took the new bling as a sign that Johnny was finally ready to confirm his engagement to 27-year-old actress Amber Heard.

When asked about the news, the 50-year-old actor replied: 'The fact that I'm wearing a chick's ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway. Not very subtle.'

Of course, it's common practice for the woman to wear a diamond leading up to her wedding - but you don't usually see the man broadcasting his engaged status with a ring. But why shouldn't it go both ways?

In the name of gender equality, we love the idea of Johnny jumping on the 'man-gagement ring' train. But before we get too excited, we have to point out that he's actually wearing Amber's ring - not his own male version.

A source told US Weekly that it was 'too big for her, so he started wearing it.' Hmm... seems like she'd just get it resized.

At this point, we're not sure what's going on. Is Johnny making a feminist statement? Is he just messing with the media? Did he just borrow the ring to glam up his outfit?

Either way, we'll take this as a sign that their relationship is going stron - and that a fabulous A-list wedding is well on the way.
