It was a big night for Emeli Sandé and Ben Howard at last night's BRIT Awards as she took home the gongs for Best British Female and Best Album while Howard was named Best British Male and the Best British Breakthrough.

Mumford and Sons accepted the prize for the Best British Group, while One Direction continued their winning streak by bagging the new award for Global Success.

Adele couldn't be at the ceremony but thanked the BRITs and her fans for the Best British Single award from LA where she is currently rehearsing for her performance at the Oscars on Sunday night.

She said: 'Thank you so much for this Brit Award, it means a lot.

'Sorry I can't be with you tonight, I'm in LA rehearsing for the Oscars. I won't keep you too long because I don't want to interrupt the best album speech at the end of the night. But I love you all.'
