'I walked in and I broke into a cold sore on the spot'

Nicole Kidman and her husband Keith Urban appeared on The Graham Norton Show last Friday, one month ahead of the actress's 50th birthday.

While talking birthdays, the Big Little Lies actress opened up about why she's not a fan of surprise parties, remembering the surprise party thrown for her on her 3oth birthday when she was married to ex-husband Tom Cruise.

'It was so shocking to me because people had come overseas, and they’d set it all up,' she explained. 'I walked in and I broke out in a cold sore like on the spot. My whole body couldn’t understand. The night was awful because I was like, "I have to go! I feel revolting!"'

She continued: 'Also, the other thing about surprise parties is. . . as a girl, you kind of want to be dressed and ready for it. You don’t want to be in your sweatpants and a tee shirt and everyone else is all dressed up.'

It seems that her husband, Keith Urban, might have changed her mind though, with the 49-year-old country musician explaining how he successfully surprised his wife on her 40th birthday, going for a more intimate celebration.

'I lit off a tonne of fireworks. She was shooing a film - Australia, the Baz Luhrmann film - and we were in this very small town in Australia. I miraculously found some company nearby that did fireworks and said, "Just bring everything you have. Just bring everything." And there was like a little mountaintop or something and I had a couch taken up there, dropped off there, and we drove up there.'

He continued: 'We got out of the car and I said, "Oh look, there's a couch over here!" She's like, "A couch?" We sat down and then all these fireworks started going off.'

With the Big Little Lies actress turning 50 next month, we're sure Nicole is desperate to know what surprises are in store, with Keith joking, 'I've got a lot of stuff planned.'
