PICS! Everything you need to know about Russell & Katy's exotic Indian wedding
Since their New Year’s Eve engagement, Russell Brand and Katy Perry have become one of Hollywood’s hottest pairings, with their all-out Indian wedding already being branded one of the most glittering events of the year. The pair tied the knot in front of 80 close friends and family in Rajasthan over the weekend, in a fiercely private ceremony. ‘Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr and Mrs Brand on October 23,’ a spokesman has confirmed. ‘The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couple’s closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and long time friend of the Hudson (Perry) Family. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of northern India.’
After days of celebration and a special Indian ceremony, the newlywed Mr and Mrs Brand were spotted at Jaipur airport, boarding a swanky private jet ready to whisk them off to a remote, romantic location. Reports suggest the pair will enjoy their first few weeks as a married couple at a five-star resort in the Maldives, with a rep for the pair confirming: ‘They have gone off on their own. This is special time for them now.’
As if a sumptuous Indian wedding and luxurious Indian Ocean honeymoon weren’t enough, Katy also celebrated her 26th birthday as they swept through the airport yesterday. Still dressed in full Indian attire, the new Mrs Brand accessorised her outft with a traditional gold ‘Nath’, or nose chain.
Russell and Katy went to great lengths to keep their special day under wraps, with Katy even announcing a break from Twitter during the special time. ‘TWIT BREAK: Greatest gift u can give us is respect & ♥ during this private X. No use wasting ur X w/ STOLEN or FALSE info. Thnku for this,’ she Tweeted to followers. But she couldn’t stay away from the social networking site for long. Just the day after the ceremony, she posted a single snap with the simple caption: ‘WE DID!’
Katy and Russell’s traditional Indian ceremony was held at the ultra-exclusive Arman-I-Khas resort, close to the Ranthambore Safari Park in rural Rajasthan. The pair jetted out early last week for their big day, and have since been spotted out and about around the luxury resort on several occasions. It’s thought private security firms have been stationed around the hotel to put their minds at rest as they celebrate their nuptials with a week-long series of parties and events.
It’s thought around 80 guests flew out to India for Russell and Katy’s special ceremony, to which only the pair’s closest friends and family were invited. Last Thursday Russell’s mum Barbera was spotted making her way through Mumbai airport, where later in the day Katy’s parents also touched down. According to reports, the lucky few will enjoy six days of wedding celebrations, and rest their heads in luxury five star tents.
With a guest list that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, we’re sure Russell and Katy’s nuptials were a suitably glittering affair. Jonathan Ross, David Walliams and P.Diddy were
were all thought to be in attendance out in India, but there was one noticeable absence… Superstar Rihanna – who organised the hen party, and was tipped to be Katy’s maid of honour – didn’t make the big day ‘due to work commitments’.
In the past, Katy has spoken about having John Galliano design her gown for the big day, but after she was spotted dashing into an Elie Saab boutique in Paris last week, we think a last-minute fitting could have given the game away. It?s thought Katy started off the day in traditional Indian attire ? donning a glittering blue sari and tradtitional Indian jewellery ? but made several changes during the 12-hour-long festivities. Russell meanwhile donned a nude-coloured traditional kurta before later wearing a long, elaborately embroidered coat. ‘They are very much keeping to Indian tradition,’ a friend told the Sun. ‘There will be feasting and dancing. And Katy will be painted head-to-toe in henna tattoos.’
Lucky friends and family are being treated to five days of celebrations at the remote luxury resort. It’s thought the festivities kicked off in earnest on Thursday, with a beautifully decorated ‘Bollywood-style feast’ featuring traditional dancers and snake charmers.
The pair are said to have hired a whopping 13 vehicles to take guests on exotic tiger safaris at Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park. Russell was spotted enjoying one himself – with fellow comedian David Baddiel – in the days before the wedding. Lucky friends and family were also treated to camel rides, and chauffeured around the resort on motorbikes.
It’s thought Russell and Katy opted for a traditional wedding ceremony, conducted by a friend of Katy’s family, but on Friday were also blessed by a Hindu priest ahead of the ceremony. In spectacular style, it’s thought Russell arrived at the ceremony on the back of a white horse. Two elephants named Laxmi and Mala were spotted arriving at the hotel shortly before the procession began, and were said to have accompanied the groom, with a red carpet rolled out before them. It’s thought Mr Brand entered amid a ‘bharat’, a traditional Indian wedding procession involving members of the family, to the sound of sitars, santoors and table drums. It’s also thought that the pair sat on giant thrones after the ceremony, and reportedly ‘burst out laughing’ when they set eyes on the ornate seats earlier this week.
After the formal ceremony, the festivities kicked off in full, with the bride and groom both giving speeches, and treating guests to a lavish Indian and Vegan feast. A whopping 1,380 cans of soft drink and 5,000 bottles of mineral water were reportedly shipped in for the big event, which is said to have featured a spectacular dance performance by Indian supermodel Jesse Randhawa and her husband, choreographer Sandhip Soparrkar. There were also fire eaters, jugglers, and even a fortune telling parrot.
It’s thought guests – who were asked to wear traditional Indian dress for the ceremony – will now enjoy a further three days of festivities, with celebrations set to continue at the swanky Taj Rambagh Palace Hotel in Jaipur, the scene of Russell and Katy’s engagement. The lavish gala reception is expected to have an ‘East meets West’ theme, with celebrity guest P.Diddy rumoured to perform.
Although Russell and Katy asked not to be given gifts by guests (instead they asked for money which will be donated to charity) it didn’t stop them lavishing special presents on each other. Russ spent thousands on a treat for the new Mrs Perry, buying Machli, a female Bengal tiger living at the reserve where they tied the knot. He’s also said to have given his bride a glittering ruby, said to possess ‘protective powers. Never one to be outdone, Katy splashed out on a baby elephant – also at the reserve – for her new hubby.
After a whirlwind, four-month romance, Russell popped the question to Katy with a £30,000 Cartier gold and diamond sparkler, during a romantic break in India. Russ treated his bride-to-be to the Christmas getaway and then proposed during a meticulously planned ceremony on New Year’s Eve. The pair drank champagne and ate by candlelight, watching fireworks at midnight from the back of an elephant. Sneaky Russell hid Katy’s two-carat rock among the flowers in their candlelit private garden, and the rest is history!
Yes they were beautiful, but Kate and Jamie’s lavish country nuptials didn’t come cheap – it’s thought the pair splashed out an eye watering £1 million on their special day. And next up comes the honeymoon. The pair were picked up by helicopter from their country pad, with Kate showing off her style credentials once again, in a chic Stella McCartney suit. It’s thought the newlyweds could jet off to Thailand or Africa to tour and soak up the sun.
