We’re still obsessed with shell jewellery and we’re buying ALL of these

Shell jewellery was one of last summer's biggest trends, and whilst many thought it would be a fad, the trend is definitely here to stay. It started off on the catwalk, was a major player on Instagram, and is now everywhere.
Shell jewellery trend
You could definitely say this trend took everyone by surprise last summer. It first appeared in the form of conch necklaces around the necks of male models at Prada's SS18 show, and other designers have since added shells to their collections (we're obsessed with Altuzarra and Jacquemus' accessories, but that's another story).
Influencers such as Lendra Medine, Pandora Sykes, Monikh and Lizzy Vdligt were early-adopters, and it wasn't long before everyone else was in on it. It's definitely holiday-inspired fashion, which, according to Lisa Aiken, Fashion Director of Moda Operandi, is the secret to its lasting power.
'Shells are one of those things that feels like the memento you brought home from your holiday. There is a memory attached to it. That's why I think this trend has staying power,' she says.
But make no mistake, shell jewellery may be reminiscent of holidays, but we're not talking cheap souvenirs here. The key to wearing it is elevating it. Think good quality puka shells embellished with crystals, or mounted in the most delicate gold settings.
Shell earrings
Shell earrings were definitely the hero piece of SS18, and we can't mention these without shining the spotlight on WALD, the Berlin brand founded by Joyce Binneboese and Dana Roski, whose single 'just a friend' earring was an instant cult hit. For something a little less subtle, Rebecca de Ravenel's statement Ophelia and Tallulah styles are just the right side of chic. For SS19, designs are getting bolder and more colourful.

Shell bracelets
If earrings aren't your thing, then you'll love Tohum's plain or gold-covered Puka shell bracelets, the ultimate finishing touch (and we're in love with the anklets too). But the good thing is if you don't have the budget for these, there are loads of great high-street options too: ASOS, Mango, & Other Stories and H&M all have some great shell earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.
Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).
Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.
However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.
Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
