Chastity Bono announces decision to change gender
Chastity Bono, the only child of singer Cher and her late husband Sonny Bono, has begun hormone therapy to swap gender.
The 40-year-old, who came out as a lesbian 20 years ago and has been a vocal advocate of gay and transgendered rights ever since, announced a desire to be known henceforth as 'Chaz'.
Chastity's publicist, Howard Bragman, who made the announcement, was careful to refer to his client as 'he'.
"Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honour his true identity," Bragman told the Mail. "He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones.
"It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."
While Chastity began the hormone treatment earlier this year, it's not clear whether he will undergo surgery as part of the transformation.
