Kate Middleton artist, Paul Emsley, reveals he has an alternative portrait in his studio

Paul Emsley, the artist responsible for the first official portrait of Kate Middleton, has revealed he has an alternative version of the painting in his studio.

Speaking to The Washington Post, he said that in the other portrait the Duchess of Cambridge 'appears bright-eyed and young, refreshed, even playful.'

When asked about his experience of spending time with Kate as she sat for the portrait, which is now on display at the National Portrait Gallery, Emsley described the Duchess as genuine and warm.

He said: 'I found her to be remarkable. She really does have a genuine, spontaneous warmth about her. I also found her to be very perceptive. She was interested and had interesting things to say. But the main thing I would say about her is. She is someone who makes you feel very relaxed.'

The artist also addressed his critics, who have panned the much talked about painting.

'Critics have a job to do,' he said. 'I understand that. It's not just to criticize. They're trying to interpret art for the public. That's fine. I understand why they do it, but I'm not particularly interested. I honestly wouldn't really take their opinions too seriously.'
