Tom Daley did something incredibly brave yesterday. Taking to Twitter in a short YouTube video, he confessed to the world that he's currently in a relationship with another man. And has been since spring.
Remaining coy and notoriously private about girlfriends since his rise to fame in the London 2012 Olympics – and quite rightly – Tom's love life became the subject of much speculation. The bronze medallist described how who he was dating was even brought up in sports interviews, and so he felt the time was right to tell the world that he's now in a relationship – a very happy one – and that relationship just so happens to be with a man.
He said: 'In spring this year my life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great.
'That someone is a guy.'
Aside from Tom's bravery and the incredibly brave way he decided to break this news, what's astounded us most is how the public has reacted to the 19-year-old's confession. With nothing but support.
Tom, who's been open about his struggle with bullying from a young age, even attempted to discourage hurtful remarks by revealing what HE thinks his late father would say about the news. And he told us: 'He always used to say "As long as you are happy, I'm happy".'
Tom retweeted a comment from Stephen Fry yesterday, which read: 'I opened the second door on my advent calendar and Tom Daley came out. Seriously @TomDaley1994 congratulations. So happy for you.'
Then Lady Gaga got involved: 'Between @TomDaley1994 and @Magicjohnson 's Oprah Interview about his son, what an inspiring and brave week!'
'Tom Daley' has been trending on Twitter for over 24 hours.
Kylie Minogue said: 'Inspiring and brave…..as always!!! #RespectTom.'
And then this happened... Russell Brand added: 'Well done sunshine, dive into love.'
David Walliams chipped in with: 'Of course we support you @TomDaley1994 and we all love you even more for your bravery and honesty. X.'
Gary Lineker said: 'Delighted that @TomDaley1994 is happy in his new relationship. Well done for sharing it. Good luck to them both.'
Tom has thanked fans for their 'overwhelming' support today.
