But will Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson land the lead?
Earlier this year, Hollywood was abuzz with whispers movie execs were planning a new biopic of late singer Jeff Buckley, with smouldering Twi-star Robert Pattinson tipped to take the lead. Now the movie has been given the go-ahead, but will R-Patz land the role?
Reports suggest Jake Scott – who directed Rob’s girlfriend Kristen Stewart in Welcome to the Rileys – will take charge, with work starting on the flick next year.
And that’s not all. It’s thought rights to Jeff Buckley’s music are also being included in the incredible film deal, which could see producers on the hunt for an actor with a musical background.
So could Robert Pattinson be the star?. The Twilight actor has made no secret of his desire to become a music star, and is rumoured to have already set his heart on the role.
‘Rob is obsessed with this project and is doing everything he can to land the part,’ one source told the Daily Express back in January.
‘He has already told his business team this is his passion and they agree it could be the film that makes him a legitimate Oscar contender.’
But it seems R-Patz could have some fierce competition on his hands for the sought after role.
According to reports, James Franco, Jared Leto and Andrew Garfield are all hot contenders.
And last year, producer Michelle Sy hinted that R-Patz was keen on the role, but insisted he would have to audition like everyone else.
‘I’ve met actors who are keen on the part and Robert was one,’ she said.
‘The actor must be able to play music and sing, or at least make it believable he can do that. Until we start auditions there’s no way we know who’s best for the part.’
