Leonardo DiCaprio has finally shed his status as the award season bridesmaid, after bagging the Best Actor gong at the 2014 Golden Globes.

Honoured for his captivating role in The Wolf On Wall Street, Leo - who was accompanied by his mother Irmelin on the red carpet - saw off competition from Jennifer Lawrence's American Hustle co-star, Christian Bale, on the night.

It's been nine long years since Leonardo DiCaprio was last named a winner at the Golden Globes, where his lead role in 2005's The Aviator also saw him win Best Actor. But with a total of NINE nominations since 1994, Leo's recent win feels more than a little overdue.

Talking about his role in the Martin Scorsese film, DiCaprio told reporters backstage: 'I stopped this film and it was like a giant adrenaline dump. I haven’t been able to work since, really.

'It was a phenomenal experience. I suppose I’ve been doing this for a long period of time. Making movies is an interesting process. You put your entire life on hold. And these characters really do envelop you, for better or for worse. So, thank God none of the attributes of this character rubbed off on my real life, because I probably wouldn’t be standing here today.'

Leo's Golden Globes win could set him up for his most successful awards season yet, as Hollywood prepares to descend on the BAFTAs and the Oscars later this month.

Meanwhile Jennifer Lawrence has been the talk of the 71st annual Golden Globes, as she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in American Hustle, enjoyed a spot of PDA with boyfriend Nicholas Hoult and photobombed Taylor Swift on the red carpet. Amazing.
