Revealing all on the red carpet at Cannes, the director jokingly took credit for Shia and Carey's relationship, admitting he played Cupid for the hot young pair on the set of their latest film.
'It was all thanks to me,' he told US magazine People.
'You could see their chemistry right away, and it was pretty powerful.'
But Oliver says the pair were completely professional, and tried to keep their romance under wraps.

'They were completely professional on the set, but there was no mistaking what was happening,' he said.
'I was thrilled when I realised they were going to be an item.
'It just made their scenes together all the better - especially the love scenes. Let's just say it was no stretch for them.'
The shy couple aren't often spotted out and about together, and rarely talk about their relationship.
But the loved-up pair were spied sharing a sweet moment over the weekend, stopping for a cuddle as they strolled hand in hand through the exclusive Hotel Eden Roc in Cannes.
