The race to the Oscars is on, as awards season was declared open this weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Eddie Redmayne, Rosamund Pike, Felicity Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch led the charge of Brits tipped for success, and were also amongst the best dressed on the red carpet (nice velvet jacket, Ed).

Eddie brought his new wife Hannah Bagshawe as he picked up the night’s top honour, the Desert Palm Achievement Award, for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. Tipped to scoop a lot more prizes throughout the season, the newlywed actor was praised by Palm Springs International Film Festival chairman Harold Matzner for his ‘stunning performance as ALS-stricken scientist Stephen Hawking.’

Rosamund Pike, who gave birth to her second son only a month ago, also attended, wearing an Alexander McQueen trapeze dress as she collected Best Breakthrough Actress for her role as Amy Dunne in Gone Girl.

Benedict Cumberbatch meanwhile came with his new fiancé, theatre director Sophie Hunter, as he accepted the award for Best Ensemble Cast with his The Imitation Game co-stars.
