Just one week after announcing a split from his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver, Arnold Schwarzenegger has released a shocking statement admitting to fathering a child with a member a household staff – over a decade ago.
According to reports, Schwarzenegger’s marriage hit the rocks when he informed his wife of the sordid details earlier this year, after stepping down from his role in office.
The TV journalist and actor-turned politician – who married in 1986 – confirmed they would be going their separate in a shock statement last Tuesday, which explained they were ‘living apart’ while they worked on their relationship.
But in a bizarre twist to the tale, the full extent of the reasons behind the split have been revealed today, by Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.
The ex-Terminator star has confirmed he fathered a child with a long-standing female member of household staff over a decade ago, but kept the news a secret from his wife until earlier this year.
It’s thought the employee retired in January, after serving 20 years with the famous family, leading the actor to reveal the news to his wife – who then left the family home.
Confirming the story in a statement to US newspaper Los Angeles Times, the ex-actor apologised for his behaviour, and said he's prepared to take 'full responsibility' for the hurt he has caused.
'After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,' the printed statement read.
'I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry'.
He added: 'I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not.'
Schwarzenegger already has four children with his wife: Katherine, 21 Christina, 20. Patrick, 18 and 14-year-old Christopher.
