We joined forces with Procter & Gamble and asked you to nominate a special mum. So how’s our first winner enjoying her prize — a year’s worth of personal training?

Maria Hickey, 23, is an English teacher and part-time beauty adviser

‘I saw the competition and, as Mum is so into her sport, I thought she’d be perfect. She is always entering runs and has raised a lot of money for charity. I’m so proud of her huge achievement. She took up running seriously about five years ago and it didn’t take long before I noticed a changed person. It’s great, as it’s boosted her confidence and she has become so much more positive. Mum has had one session of her prize with Alan, the personal trainer. I was there and she absolutely loved it. She can’t wait for the next one in a week’s time. He tested her fitness and could immediately tell how she was doing for her age range and what she should aim for. She’d never had this type of advice before. He had her doing planks, sit-ups, press-ups, and told her to practise three times a week. Is Mum obsessed with her running? Yes, I’d say she is, but in a good way.’

Sue Hickey, 56, is married with two grown-up children and is a housewife ‘I first started running in about 1990, when we discovered that my dad had a heart problem. I thought I’d do something for the British Heart Foundation, and entered a 5K run round the Tower of London. I really plodded round and my time was terrible. ‘After that I didn’t really run regularly until I was about 50. Now, I’m out there three times a week and I do lots of races, including half marathons, for which I try to raise money for charity – so far I’ve collected over £2,000. ‘I’m hoping that my fabulous prize of personal training will improve my times by strengthening my core. My aim is to do 10K in under an hour. I so enjoyed my first session: Alan had me doing sit-ups and I couldn’t even get up off the floor, but I’m working on it!’
