When I was 14 I used to wear a 'Stop Toxic Tides' t-shirt from a cool surf brand, and I loved the reaction I got from people – basically cute surfer guys smiling and nodding at me (well smiling at my tee, but it still got their attention). Now slogan tees are back on-trend and I couldn't be happier.
Celebrities have been using the slogan tee medium to communicate their inner thoughts for years, Britney Spears famously wore the pink 'I am the American Dream' tee before shaving her head, whacking a pap and generally going a little (a lot) AWOL. Then there was Katie Price, who seen showing allegiance to, erm, herself following her divorce from Peter Andre. (FYI, he retaliated with a 'Team Children' T-Shirt. Ouch)
More recently style icons such as Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne have been spotted in very cool slogan tees. I love Alexa’s Marc Jacobs 'off the deep end' and Cara’s 'Last clean tee'. Actually, I'm sure, after travelling between London, Paris, Milan and New York, and walking in a zillion runway shows this autumn/winter 13 season, that it probably was Cara's last clean tee!
If you’re going to go slogan think what you want to say. Obviously people will take it with a pinch of salt, but it's not worth upsetting or alienating yourself from the people that help you the most, eh, Millie Mackintosh? Or are you being ironic?
My all time favourite slogan tee has to be courtesy of the legendary David Hasselhoff. Don’t hassle the Hoff, people.
