Remember when you wore a stretchy plastic choker around your neck growing up in the 90s? Remember how cool you thought it looked, how classy and grown up this jewellery option seemed – especially when all dressed up with All Saints crop top on and your hair in sparkly butterfly clips?
Well the trend is back, but luckily it’s looking even better than it did the first time around.
The choker began its resurgence along with slip dresses, grunge and all of the other 90s throwback trends that emerged on last autumn's catwalks. But unlike some of the others, it’s carried on through to spring, with brands from Saint Laurent to H&M proposing fierce new options both at the high end of the industry and on the high street.
On the red carpet, Taylor Swift, Kate Hudson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and more are using the choker to add edge to full length gowns and simple bandeau tops alike. But supermodel Kendall Jenner has got to be the revival's biggest celebrity fan. She seems to rarely leave the house without one on at the moment, working the accessory into both her red carpet and off duty style repertoires.
A step on from last summer’s accessory du jour, the Seventies scarf, fashion editors and bloggers were also giving the trend a whirl on the street style circuit during the latest round of fashion week shows. Evidence; Chiara Ferragni and co. mastering the art in the gallery above.
The styling trick, it seems, lies in what you team your choker with. An off shoulder top, a slip dress, or just something to expose the rest of your décolletage seems to balance out the skin to fabric ratio and prevent anyone from looking like they’re actually just wearing a turtleneck. The best bit? If you’re strapped for cash then (carefully) tying a raw ribbon around your neck has got to be the cheapest, most instant DIY trend update we’ve ever seen.
