How housework can help you burn 50,000 calories a year
BIN THAT GYM membership and pick up a Hoover instead: a new survey has discovered housework will shift 50,000 calories a year.
Research boffins have discovered that the average person walks 22 miles a year while cleaning and burns enough calories to eat 192 bars of chocolate or 146 cheeseburgers. In fact, cleaning our homes provides a better workout than an hour at the gym.
‘To prevent weight gain, most adults need to expend around 400 calories per day in physical activity, which is equivalent to around two hours of dusting and cleaning or 82 minutes of vacuuming and mopping,’ notes Dr Gary O’Donovan, a lecturer in sport and exercise medicine at the University of Exeter.
