In the run-up to a dinner party or a girls’ night the selection of the wine is always a tricky one. You’re not made of money but a trip to Majestic somehow seems far more credible than nipping to your local supermarket.
Well in what must be some of the best wine news ever, it turns out that a simple trip to Asda can now score you a bottle of the world’s finest wine. The wine in question is Asda’s La Moneda Reserva Malbec from Central Valley, Chile.
Crowned best in show in the 'single varietal red' category at the Decanter World Wine Awards, the Chilean Malbec is part of Asda’s own label red wine. The low priced booze to everyone’s surprise also won best for the under £15 category. Turns out a good quality wine doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Ranked top by a panel of 240 experts in a blind taste test, the wine was praised for its ‘freshly crushed black fruit, creamy vanilla yogurt and pepper spice flavour.’ It also comes highly recommended as an accompanying tipple for barbecued meats by Asda’s wine buying manager Ed Betts.
Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a glass of ‘excellent freshness’ from a wine with a finish ‘full of energy.' You will sound so wine savvy at your next (most probably rainy) barbecue.
You may want to hurry though because the growing demand for the £4.37 award-winning wine is causing it to fly off the shelves. So much so, in fact, that the site recently crashed due to the high number of orders coming through. It’s now listed as ‘sold out’ but it’s still available on the grocery site and in-store.
The ‘absolute crowd pleaser’ is usually priced at £5.75 and managed to beat out 600 Chilean wines to win Platinum Best after a week of tasting by the judges. Overall, English wines received high praise with a whopping 90% of those tasted winning medals.
This calls for a celebration: time to uncork an Asda Malbec.
