The two actresses are being pitched against each other to star in the new Hollywood adaptation of the famous Stieg Larsson thriller
The new silver screen adaptation of the famous Stieg Larsson thriller is being lead by Fight Club director David Fincher, who has narrowed down his two choice leading ladies to Miss Stewart and Miss Mulligan.
‘It’s an edgy, sexy, demanding role which would have been perfect for Angelina Jolie – if she was only ten years younger,’ says a studio executive insider.
‘The very best twentysomething actresses around today are in the frame – and that’s a very short list.’
The subtitled Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is currently making waves in UK cinemas – and tells the story of tattoo-covered computer hacker Lisbeth Salandar, who helps a journalist track down a missing woman.
David’s previous history with Twilight starlet Kristen – he directed her in the 2002 thriller Panic Room – may just see her edge out Carey in the race.
But, Miss Mulligan’s recent Oscar nomination might have put her in new favour with the Hollywood director.
Either way, these two girls are no strangers to competition – they were both up for the BAFTA Orange Rising Star award this year – a prize Kristen eventually pipped Carey to the post for.
