  • Rebel Wilson is 36 not 29. And, what?

Rebel Wilson has apparently been lying about her age. The story doing the rounds at the moment is that the actress is 36 rather than 29.

According to Australian tabloid Woman’s Day, some high school ‘friends’ of Rebel’s have dug up some old yearbook photos that show the star to be much older than she claims to be and called Melanie Bownds.

Of course, the actress famous for playing Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect, responded in the best way.

‘OMG I’m actually a 100 year old mermaid formerly known as ‘CC Chalice’… thanks shady Australian press for your tall poppy syndrome x,’ she wrote on Twitter.

‘Okay but all jokes aside now… my real name is Fat Patricia x.’

Rebel may have told a fib about her age, but what we need to look at is the reason why? The subject of women ageing in Hollywood has been talked about at great length in the past and this news story just goes to show that the problem is still there.

Only recently, Antonio Banderas gave an interview about the extreme pressures facing female actresses. ‘I understand though, especially [for] women, the tremendous pressure that they receive in a place like Hollywood, where thousands of new girls arrive every year all fresh and new, and when you’re getting to a certain age, they can feel the push of these things,’ he told the Press Association.

‘It’s more cruel unfortunately for women than men,’ he said. ‘There’s a social convention that allows men to grow older and not be so criticized and pushed about beauty, and for women it’s different. It’s ridiculous, but that’s the way that we created image around ourselves.’

Let’s give Rebel a break, shall we? A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do in youth-obsessed Hollywood.
