We were pretty disappointed when we found out that Charlie Hunnam wouldn’t be playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film. The 34-year-old Sons of Anarchy star had to give up the role due to conflicts in his increasingly busy schedule.

You won’t see us complaining about his replacement, Jamie Dornan (swoon), but we feel for the would-be Christian Grey. He’s got some serious regrets about passing up the role of a lifetime:

‘I'm just really excited to see it. I was just really, really invested and wanted to work with [director] Sam [Taylor-Johnson] and play that character. I'm really, really curious,’ he told reporters at a press conference. ‘I would've brought a certain rugged charm to the role but believe me, Jamie's going to do just fine’.

We can’t disagree with him there. it doesn't get more rugged than his gun-slinging, motorcycle-riding character Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy

‘I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey, otherwise I wouldn't have taken it on in the first place. When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it's heartbreaking not to be able to play him,’ he said at the conference. ‘It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.’

His schedule simply wouldn’t permit him to take on Christian Grey, Jax Teller and his role in Guillermo Del Toro’s new film, Crimson Peak, to be released in 2015.

But he’s still a huge supporter of the Fifty Shades of Grey film. ‘If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there,’ he said. ‘If not, I'll go and buy some tickets on opening night.’
