From putting bird poo on their faces to letting leeches drink their blood, see which stars are going to extreme lengths to stay beautiful

Bar Refaeli is strikingly pretty - but that doesn't mean she's above shelling out some major cash to enhance her natural beauty.

The 28-year-old supermodel (who famously dated Leonardo DiCaprio) is the latest celebrity to try out the gold facial, which has been gaining popularity in London over recent months.

Bar posted an Instagram snap of her face dripping with a liquid gold mask on Tuesday. She didn't offer up much information on what exactly she was doing - but she appears to be getting a Gold Bee Venom Facial, a £1,000 treatment that promises anti-ageing effects.

But the gold facial certainly wasn't Bar's first foray into nontraditional skincare. Back in December she shared a picture of herself getting a vampire facial - a creepy-looking procedure that a few other brave celebs (like Kim Kardashian) have also tested out. It involved reinjecting a patient's own blood back into their skin to help treat wrinkles.

Of course, Bar is hardly the only celebrity to indulge in bizarre beauty behaviours. From the very expensive to the very weird to the very gross, the rich and famous are always coming up with the surprising new ways to stay gorgeous.

Here are a few of our favourites...

Demi Moore

Most people go out of their way to avoid leeches, but Demi Moore admitted in 2008 that she willingly lets them suck her blood. 'I feel like I've always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimise your health and healing,' she said.

'I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy. These aren't just swamp leeches though - we are talking about highly trained medical leeches... It detoxifies your blood - I'm feeling very detoxified right now.'

Jessica Simpson

During her US reality show The Price of Beauty, Jessica tried out all sorts of unique treatments from around the world. But perhaps the strangest thing she did in the name of beauty was chug down cow wee. 'In Mumbai, we drank cow urine because it detoxes you and it's good for your skin,' she said. 'I puked that up like all over the place.'

Sandra Bullock

Sandra's weird beauty routine is less about what product she uses and more about where she puts it. The Oscar winner admitted to putting haemorrhoid cream under her eyes. 'I didn't realise that putting haemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business,' she said. 'But apparently, butt cream helps lines around the eyes!'

Teri Hatcher

We've all heard the health benefits of drinking a nice glass of red wine. But what about bathing in one? The Desperate Housewives star told the Daily Telegraph that she pours a glass of red wine into her bath to help moisturise and exfoliate her skin. (Seems like an awful waste of a good Merlot to us...)

Okay, VB hasn't exactly fessed up to this one, but sources say she indulged in a Geisha Facial during a trip to Japan a few years ago. The unique treatment uses bird poo to help clear up the skin - and costs about £100 per go. With that price tag, we hope the procedure comes with a complimentary shower afterward.
