Red

Beaujolais Cuvée des Vignerons, £4.99, Waitrose

This wine is great for easy and relatively inexpensive weekend drinking. Made from the Gamay grape just south of the Burgundy region in France, it is light-bodied with vibrant cherry and raspberry flavours. It doesn’t offer the heaviness or complexity of older, richer wines, but at its price it’s certainly quaffable. Buy it here

White

Ara, Select Blocks Sauvignon Blanc 2011/2012, Marlborough, £11.99, Majestic

You’re not likely to go wrong with a Sauvignon Blanc made in Marlborough, New Zealand, renowned for their world-class whites, and Ara’s Select Blocks is no exception. It has intense, ripe and zesty fruit flavours with a textured mouth and a lean dry finish. A great choice on its own or perfect for with a variety of white fish dishes. Buy it here

Sparkling

Ridgeview Grosvenor 2009, Sussex, £25.25, widely available from leading independent merchants

If you’re planning on celebrating this weekend, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary or simply because we’ve got an extra day off then look no further than Ridgeview’s, Grosvenor 2009, English sparkling. Made on the south-west coast in Sussex, this award-winning wine is elegant and balanced with lively bubbles and a core of lemon and soft peach flavours. A worthy rival to Champagne.
