Matchy-Matchy: The Couples That Dress Alike
Twinning is winning
Twinning is winning
Some would say the couples that wear coordinating outfits do not look good. That matching outfits should be strictly reserved for infant twins, sports teams and ensemble cast members in musicals.
Often these people are right the matchy-matchy look has many pitfalls. It s a tricky thing to pull off without looking like you re wearing fancy dress (ahem Victoria Beckham and David Beckham back in the 90s).
Luckily, most of us have the image of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in an extraordinary patchwork of matching denim etched on to our memories it acts as a red flag if we ever consider anything similar with our own partner (let s not forget JT even sported a denim cowboy hat).
Timberlake has graduated to the excellent end of the matchy-matchy spectrum since then. He and wife Jessica Biel are often quietly in sync when it comes to their fashion choices.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (plus their brood of 6 children) also have dress-alike style down to a fine art. The whole gang often wears a coordinating palette of earthy tones with sharp tailoring accents and classics staples (denim, linen, silk).
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge also offer a lesson in the power of understated coordination. They frequently step out in pieces that are subtly in tune.

Back at the shouty end of the spectrum are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The pair has a penchant for giant coats and stone tones, by which we mean lots of beige and greige.
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
There s also a set of dress-alike couples who look like they borrow from each other s wardrobes. Diane Keaton and Woody Allen did it first in Annie Hall, Kate Moss seems to have done it with everyone she s dated and today Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton do it on weekends.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge
Kate and Wills often coordinate their down-time looks - think polo shirts in shades of purple and so-nearly-the-same shirts. This particular shot is a highlight because they're matching AND wearing stetsons AND sporting cowboy boots.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Similar suits in shades of blue steel. These two are really, really good looking together.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Power tailoring + a stormy sky palette = harmony, the Kardashian-West way.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Yup, they are both wearing gold-buttoned, double-breasted jackets here. We're glad Kanye didn't take the copycat vibes next level - he's added leather trousers.
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
Leather on leather, on leather, on leather. Why? Because it was a Versace party, and it was 1999. That's the only explanation we have...
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
In the intervening years this pair have upped their sartorial stakes MASSIVELY. However, they weren't the first couple to nail the co-ordinating tux look....
Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt
Brad went on to marry Angelina Jolie, one of the most glamorous actresses alive. Not bad for the mullet from Missouri, ay?
Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston
Justin and Jennifer have a complementary down-time wardrobe of classic denim, jersey staples and leather - here's proof they're in tune on the red carpet too.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
A symbiotic spectrum of brown. Yum.
Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton
These two definitely share each others clothes #goals
Jamie Hince and Kate Moss
When in doubt, wear similar neckerchiefs - they're like frienship bracelets for adults who are romantic with each other.
