Happy birthday to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who celebrate their 30th birthday today!

Ahh the Olsen twins. Mary-Kate and Ashley are now two of fashion’s most influential designers and, thanks to their enviable personal wardrobes and unique off-duty styling ethos, they’re also among our favourite modern-day style pin-ups.

Balancing kooky and cool, grungy and sleek, the Olsen sisters’ styles are the subject of books, blogs and Pinterest boards alike. Now designers and co-owners of not one, but two high fashion labels, The Row and Elizabeth And James, their trend-setting abilities know no bounds.

As any child of the Nineties knows, these two were trendsetters from birth, working the best dungarees on the box in their career-launching TV series Two Of A Kind and falling in love with fashion after designing kids clothing for their now-billion dollar entertainment company, Dualstar, at the tender age of 12.

Half the fun of being a twin is, of course, twin dressing and while they were growing up, Mary-Kate and Ashley did matchy matchy better than any duo we’d ever seen before. The Olsens were adorable (does it get any cuter than the 1993 pic to our left?) and Mary-Kate’s style was always tipped as ‘tomboy’ while Ashley did ‘girlie girl’.

As they got older they began to develop their own personal styles, and while they don’t match up quite like they used to, their tastes have evolved in a similar way. Both have a love for discreet, subtle luxury – Celine, Balenciaga, Chanel as well as, of course, their own labels – and vintage, too, forms a huge part of the twins’ wardrobes.

Proportion is everything in an Olsen outfit (layering knitwear and slip dresses, or tailoring and off-kilter accessories) something that is reflected in both their own style and their design work at The Row. The sisters scooped the coveted Womenswear Designer Of The Year prize at this year’s CFDA awards, cementing their status as key players on the New York Fashion Week schedule and making them some of the youngest businesswomen in America’s luxury fashion market.

With incredible personal fortunes amassed before they even turned 18, you can’t blame Mary-Kate and Ashley for investing in a few stunning dresses along the way – so let’s take a look at their best ever style moments, shall we?
