And there's also a petition to rename Mars after the iconic singer...

David Bowie has been honoured with his own constellation of stars, posthumously.

Scientists have registered a lightning bolt shaped collection of stars as a homage to the iconic singer who created the other-worldy persona, Ziggy Stardust, and released the single Space Oddity in 1969. Bowie's also hits included Starman and Life on Mars.

Studio Brussels registered a new star constellation with the MIRA observatory comprised of seven stars (to represent each of Bowie's albums) in the vicinity of Mars.

Philippe Mollet from the MIRA Observatory said in a statement: 'it was not easy to determine the appropriate stars' but that 'Studio Brussels asked us to give Bowie a unique place in the galaxy'.

'The constellation is a copy of the iconic Bowie lightning and was recorded at the exact time of his death' he added.

Prior to this, two change.org petitions have also gained momentum in order to honour David Bowie's passing.

The first is a petition to have Mars named after Bowie, which currently has almost 7,000 signatures.

Created by someone named ‘Danny Rapscallion’, he explained: ‘[Bowie] has immortalised himself like no other. He has delivered to us accolades and art like no other. The biggest accolade we can give back to this great man and in his memory - Rename planet Mars after him. If you agree then sign this petition and share.

‘He gave us so much. A piece of the galaxy in return is just a drop in the universe.’

After reaching over 3,000 signatures, the founder posted an update saying, ‘I'm not sure what the next stage is yet but considering the enormity of the reach and the amount of support, I am going to look at points of contact and plot the next move. Keep going Bowians!’

The second petition, created by Simon Mitchell, is to feature David Bowie on a forthcoming £20 banknote and has just shy of 15,000 signatures.

Simon explains, ‘The Bank of England is due to announce a successor to Adam Smith, who is currently featured on the reverse of the UK £20, and the public were asked to nominate a non-living visual artist. Bowie's innovation and art included painting as well as his better know music and acting careers. As a non-living visual artist he now meets the Bank of England’s Criteria for the next person to feature on the £20 note.’

We’re not sure how likely it is that either of these creative petitions will become a reality, but it’s safe to say David Bowie’s legacy will continue to live on.
