Marie Claire celebrity interviews: Kristin Davis James White

In an exclusive interview with Marie Claire, Sex and the City star Kristin Davis has revealed the extent of her struggle with alcoholism.

The pretty brunette candidly reveals how she didn't think she would live past 30, and that alcoholism runs in her family.

She admitted: 'I really didn't think I would pass 30. I don't know why or whatever, I just didn't. That's a very weird thing to say, I'm sorry. I don't know. Maybe it's because I was drinking so much as a youth. I drank a lot when I was a teenager and I don't drink any more, because that's when I thought, you know, I'm gonna end up a car wreck. I just had a fatalistic view of the whole situation at that point.'

Davis went on to reveal that she drank to 'fit in', saying: 'It's very hard to say a simple answer as to why. Alcoholism is a genetically predisposed disease and it does run in my family. I also think I felt like a misfit. I was in the South, everybody was blonde. I just didn't feel like I fitted in. It was sort of my way of fitting.'

The star of the new Sex and the City movie says that it wasn't until she started acting that she realised she couldn't indulge both of her passions: the drinking had to go. At 22, she became teetotal.

'What made me stop? I realised it was not going to end well. I got into the acting programme, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn't doing so well in my classes. I thought, "Do you know what? It's going to be one or the other. I can't really have both."'
