The Crown season two trailer has landed and here’s what we know so far

We officially can’t wait.

Following Netflix’s huge success with the first season of The Crown last year, we weren’t surprised when a second season was confirmed, set to air this December.

For too long we have been waiting for news and teasers regarding the second instalment of the royal biopic, and just this week the highly-anticipated trailer was released – and it did not disappoint.

The series follows the life of Queen Elizabeth, with the first season covering her first few years as monarch. ‘The first series was very much about the family and her finding her role after her father died and coming into her own,’ Claire Foy explained to Vanity Fair about her role.

‘The second series is very much about the outside world,’ she continued. ‘It’s very much about Philip and his impact on the crown, and their marriage. It’s about Margaret and Tony Armstrong-Jones. It’s very much the outside world, and the ‘60s, and sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, and stuff that really you would not associate with the Queen of England.’

Starting where the first season left off, the second season is set to span the time period between 1956 and 1964, seeing Claire Foy and Matt Smith return to the project as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. However, it has been announced by the show’s creator Peter Morgan that this would be both Claire and Matt’s final season on the Netflix project, with a need to hire older actors for the final two seasons to accurately portray the characters' ageing process.

The new season will also see some new faces join the cast, with Michael C Hall and Jodi Balfour coming on board as US President John F Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Not to mention Matthew Goode is joining the cast as Antony-Armstrong Jones, the Earl of Snowdon – Princess Margaret’s love interest.

We officially cannot wait, but with the series coming to Netflix on December 8th, it looks like we'll have to.
