Natalie Dormer and Beverley Knight have lent their faces to Plan UK's new 'Face Up' app, which launches today as part of the charity's Because I Am A Girl campaign.
Plan UK has launched a new app designed to put girls' rights where they can't be ignored – on the faces of their supporters - ahead of the International Day Of The Girl on 10th October.
Stars including singer-songwriter Beverley Knight and Game of Thrones actresses Natalie Dormer and Lena Headey are amongst the first to lend their faces to the cause, and have been pictured with the testimonies of young girls written on their faces.
The public can now get involved in the campaign as well by using the charity's new 'Face Up' app. It works by digitally placing the words, "I’m putting girls rights where they can’t be ignored" onto a photo of your face, and adds the resulting image to Plan UK's online gallery of supporters.
Beverley was the first celebrity to get behind the initiative. 'I am shocked and saddened to know that millions of girls across the globe undergo Female Genital Mutilation or are forced into marriage,' she says. 'Plan UK is working hard to end these harmful practices, but the stories of these girls just aren't being heard. This campaign is vitally important.'
'Face Up' is part of the charity's global Because I Am A Girl campaign, which aims to champion girls' rights across the world. Through it, Plan hopes to ensure that all girls can live safe from violence, gain an education, marry who they wish and have their voices heard. The primary focus of the campaign is to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and prevent child marriage in a generation. Currently, more than 3.5 million girls are at risk from FGM across the globe, and a young girl is forced into marriage every two seconds.
The charity wants the public to back the campaign too, by using the "Face Up" app on Plan UK's website. Users are encouraged to share their image on social media, using #FaceUp.
