Jo Wood, Natalie Cassidy and Martina Hingis all pick up their dancing shoes for Strictly
The new line-up for Strictly Come Dancing has just been unveiled, and is already causing controversy.
Alongside the likes of Jo Wood, EastEnders actors Natalie Cassidy and Ricky Groves, boxer Joe Calzaghe and The Bill’s Ali Bastian, tennis player Martina Hingis has also been picked, despite the fact she’s currently facing a two-year ban from the professional game for cocaine abuse.
‘It’s behind me, this is a new challenge,’ the 29-year-old tennis star told reporters.
‘I want people to see a different side to me than the person running round the tennis court.’
Mind you, that doesn’t mean she’s not already planning her place in the final. ‘Everything I do I do to win,’ the five-time Grand Slam winner added. ‘I am very competitive.’
With a host of other sporting stars in the line-up, including Olympic long jumper Jade Johnson, retired cricketer Phil Tufnell and former jockey Richard Dunwoody, the contest looks to be an intense one.
Mind you, not everyone’s a medal-winning spring chicken, 61-year-old actress Lynda Bellingham said she was delighted to have been asked to take part. ‘I’m flattered that I have been asked. If anything I feel a lot of responsibility to make good. If you look at the people who have won, they have been fabulous dancers.’
When it comes to the fashion, meanwhile, all the contestants will be in their spangly finest, while presenter Tess Daly gets to swan about in gorgeous designer gowns, including the particularly beautiful Alberta Ferretti dress seen here. We know which wardrobe we’d prefer.
