WHY GO?

Head to Negombo, the beach-side town, just north of Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo, for a restful couple of days either at the beginning or end of your Sri Lankan trip.

THE VIBE

The legendary Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa, designed the hotel and it’s part contemporary minimalist, part classic colonial. His designs, which were a driving force for what is now known around the world as ‘tropical modernism’, are celebrated in much of the country and he is somewhat of a national treasure. It feels quite special to stay in one of his creations – think dark wood, vast white open spaces and dramatic vistas.

The hotel is set right on a wide, open beach nestled among palm trees. There are two pools – the best being the huge infinity pool looking out to sea, but you are situated right next to Jetwing Blue and they do allow you use the pools there too. The open-sided restaurant can be found right by the pools, as well as the bar. It really is a hotel to kick back and relax by the pool with a cocktail and a book.

THE ROOMS

Whichever room you end up in, you’ll be happy. They’re decorated with muted colours and tones, which only adds to the calmness of your surroundings. Each room comes with a huge private balcony or terrace that looks right out onto the ocean, which makes for the perfect spot for your sun downers as you watch the day dissolve into the horizon. The bathrooms are a design dream come true – glass-walled and polished concrete - like something out of an interiors mag.

THE EXTRAS

There’s plenty to keep you occupied if you need a break from sunbathing - a wonderful spa, a decent gym and boutiques next to reception. The main restaurant is brilliant, especially the buffet - it has practically every type of cuisine you could think of and it’s all really well made and delicious.
