Stylish eats in London's Chiswick

Not a valley in California, then? From the torrential rain which soaked us between bus stop and revolving doors, definitely not, although there's a rather incongruous line of palm trees outside, making this the most exotic stretch of the roaring Chiswick High Road.

And does the food reflect the West Coast moniker? Health nuts need not apply, this is more about modern British cuisine that LA rabbit food, with plenty of indulgent treats along the way.

What's on the menu? Along with daily changing specials, a popular grill menu and lots more to choose from, look out for 'Classic Napa' dishes, including mains like chicken Maryland and open beef Wellington with Madeira sauce, and baked Alaska or Eton mess for dessert.

And to drink? The wine menu here is packed with classics - think rioja, merlot and cabernet sauvignon - and at surprisingly affordable prices; house wines start from just £15. We, however, intrigued by the name, went for a 2005 tesch Riesling 'unplugged'. After your meal, don't miss the cocktails in the buzzy Globe Bar on the opposite side of the hotel lobby.
