Gen up on everything your online dating profile should say...

This is a Marie Claire Advertorial

When it comes to dating – the times are definitely a-changin'. And, although a bit of 'Netflix and Chill' can be fun, endless nights spent scanning the same old dating clichés can destroy even the most romantic of souls. So the next time you find yourself ranting to friends about the lack of eligible dates online, ask yourself this: could a dating site that works on compatibility rather than looks – like eHarmony – be more successful and what does your profile say about you?

Here are a few tried and tested ways to instantly up your dating game...

Be specific Keep your profile short and sweet but make every word count. You wouldn't introduce yourself to someone in a bar with your life story, so don't do it on eHarmony. It could be a fine-tuned list of what your ideal date would involve or three carefully chosen words that describe you well. Overcome writer's block by asking your friends to help – after all, they're the ones who know you best. They're also the ones you can rely on for an honest opinion when it comes to choosing profile pics.

Avoid clichés Even if you do like 'keeping fit and 'travelling' leave it out – everyone says that and unless you elaborate, it's pretty boring to read. Think of something interesting that could be a conversation starter. Maybe you've volunteered somewhere in the past or are in the process of setting up your own business? Either way, put it out there – it shows you're adventurous and confident but not arrogant – attractive assets, if you ask us.

Have fun Dating is all about the excitement of discovering new things about someone. All humans are complex, multi-layered beings and everyone has different characteristics. Most people want to find someone who can make them laugh, so show you've got a sense of humour. Don't give someone the impression they can figure you out just by reading your eHarmony biog but DO make sure you give enough away to let someone know you'd be an interesting person to date.

Be honest Where dating is concerned, honesty is always the best policy. Not everyone is looking for a long-term relationship and whittling out those who want something a little less serious can seem like half the battle. While we don't suggest you list your entire relationship history, it's worth including a one-liner to let potential dates know what you're looking for. People will appreciate your honesty and it should help filter out time-wasters. Ready to re-write your profile? For more dating advice and to find your perfect match, try eHarmony today.
