Sold yesterday in London, the star lot was written by the Princess in 1978, when she was just 17-years-old. Sent to her nanny, Mary White, the letter admitted that Diana had hoped her older sister may marry Princes Charles.

She wrote that her brother Charles and sister Jane were trying to, ‘marry off Sarah to various men but have failed in every direction.’

It continued, ‘We even thought Prince Charles might have been in the running but were relieved when that passed.’

The letter was sold by auctioneers Reeman Dansie, for £12,431 pounds.

Three further letters, again addressed to Clarke, were sold for £16,079.
