Back in the day Kim Kardashian loved the paps, but according to her PR guru and BFF Jonathan Cheban, she may have courted the attention a little bit too much. We know, we are shocked at these outrageous claims, too.
In a new video Q&A for Kim’s website KimKardashianWest.com, the friends discuss Kim’s rise to the top and the PR strategy they followed to make her a superstar.
And the rules, naturally, are pretty amazing…
1. Don’t Talk To The Paparazzi… Be silent and mysterious at all times and definitely don’t try to give interviews when walking along. 'Every time I'd go to the gym or go eat, every paparazzi would ask me questions and I would be like: "Hey guys!" Like, I so wanted the attention,' laughs Kim.
2. Wear Sunglasses And Don’t Smile… Again, you’re not supposed to be enjoying any of this. Those flashbulbs hurt your eyes, interviews bore you and all the world’s attention is so not wanted. Even if it really, really is.
3. Think WWVBD… Ask yourself, what would Victoria Beckham do? Yes Jonathan cited VB as the example for Kim to follow. 'Jonathan was like, "Do you think Victoria Beckham sits and does all these interviews?" Kim reveals. '"Do you think everyone else has smiles on their faces? You are too happy, you are smiling way too much. You need to stop talking and stop smiling".' Ouch.
4. Don’t Freak Out When You Meet Other Celebs… Reminiscing about the first time she met J-Lo, Kim reveals that she basically just lost her shit. 'I was like, I cannot believe I got a photo with her! I literally couldn't sleep at night. Afterwards, we were like, shaking.' We’d probably do the same to be fair, but once you’ve made it into the inner-circle of celebrity, this kind of behaviour is so, so not cool.
5. Look Pap-Worthy, Always. You SO weren’t expecting to be photographed today. But it’s just as well that you popped all your brand new wares on in the morning and found an enormous piece of designer luggage to hide behind in case. ‘Put your sunglasses on. You need a whole makeover,’ advises Jonathan.
6. Don’t Drive A White Range Rover Ohhh the classic marker of new-found celeb-dom. Nothing screams look at me like a super flash car, so white and shiny that it glares in the Hollywood sun. "You cannot drive around in that white Range Rover. It's time for the next step,’’ Jonathan says he told Kim when he first took her on as a client in 2007. So what super-subtle ride does Kim K travel in now? Well an all-black version of the same car. It’s all about going incognito, oui?
